January/February 2006

Happy 2007 from the PEPY team!

PEPY welcomed in the new year with many exciting developments!  We were on the road during the first three weeks so this is a joint January/February newsletter.  It has been a busy time for PEPY: a very successful volunteer trip, the second annual PEPY Ride across Cambodia, an additional trip to the school, and the arrival of the new interns!

We want to send out a huge THANK YOU to all those that chose to make the holiday season a little brighter for education in Cambodia!  We greatly appreciate your decision to give your friends and family donations in their names.  Also, the first round of Bike-to-School Program bikes have been delivered, and we want to send out another big THANK YOU to all those that helped us make this program a huge success.

We'll be back in March with more information about the PEPY Friends School and the upcoming trips!

Stay PEPY!

December Volunteer Trip - A Huge Success!
.

For 10 days in December, volunteers from around the world gathered in Cambodia for the last PEPY Voluneer trip of the year. Beginning with an extension trip in
Phnom Penh and ending in Siem Reap, volunteers visited the children of CCF, the garbage dump at Stung Menchey, the temples of Anchor Wat, floating villages, the PEPY Ride School in the rural community of Chanleas Dai and much more. See photos and read more for our volunteer’s experiences.

Update: At the PEPY Ride School
.
Earlier this week, two new interns joined the rest of the PEPY Team in visiting the PEPY Ride School.  The literacy program is continually coming into action; we've been researching and networking to find a literacy teacher and community librarian.  Also, the new mural painted by the December Volunteer trip is helping students to learn about safe drinking habits. Finally, the library is now open to all students and teachers - it's a great success!  Check out these great before and after pictures!

All Things PEPY: Recent Events, Upcoming Events
.

PEPY was recently visited by a highly enthusiastic group of students from Austin College.  After an information and discussion session and visit to the PEPY office, the students and PEPY interns headed out to visit theCambodian Children's Fund for a lively evening filled with singing and dancing.

Also, PEPY wants to extend a special thanks to Ken Kakesako and the rest of the JET crew for  their event held to raise funds for PEPY in Tottori!  Read about it and see pictures here.

Lastly, we'd like to introduce our new interns to everyone.  To read about Allana, Jill and Marine clickhere.

Cambodian Education and Bike-to-School

As we've just handed out our first set of Bike-to-School bicycles, we'd like to share statistics that our wonderful new intern  Jill Shirey has researched.

The Bike-to-School program awards students with high attendance in elementary school with a bicycle which can provide access to further education.  Although net enrollment rates for primary schools is quite high at 97.8%, this percentage plummets to 29.4% in secondary schools (for more information check out the World Bank's website).

One obstacle we've found that prevents students from going to secondary is school is long commuting distances.  Some students at the PEPY Ride School will have to travel more the 12km to secondary school.  We're hoping that with our Bike-to-School program more students living in rural Cambodia will be able to pedal the distance to education.

As you probably already know, PEPY is starting to really focus on literature this year.  Literacy rates vary from source to source, but the CIA quotes Cambodia as being 73.6% literate (for more information check out their website).  This rate is lower for females, and even lower for rural areas like Chanleas Dai.  Through our new focus on literacy PEPY hopes to measure reading levels, track student levels and create a 100% basic literacy at each school.
