Welcome to The PEPY Ride's 2nd e-newsletter!
The countdown has begun as PEPY rushes to finish plans for the first 2005-2006 PEPY Ride. With about 2 months to go, the PEPY team has been busy! We'd like to share our progress with you in this edition of The PEPY Newsletter and thank you for all your support and encouragement! We couldn't have done any of this without you, so take pride in all that you're helping The PEPY Ride accomplish.
We are excited to report that The PEPY Ride School's satellite dish has been ordered and will arrive at the school in the coming weeks. The school itself is slated for completion around the same time. Keep an eye out for a picture of the completed school in our next newsletter!
PEPY has new t-shirts for $15 US or 2,000 JY (plus shipping). Check out our 4 new designs on The PEPY Ride website and email teamleader@pepyride.org to order.
There are a few organizations, events and people who've helped PEPY take huge strides forward this past month. We'd especially like to thank these PEPY supporters:
**Phil, Jon & Andre for choosing The PEPY Ride as the official charity of the All-Japan Soccer Tournament. **Huntresses Michelle, Jamie & Megan for organizing this year's Halloween Tokyo Charity Scavenger Hunt. **Don Morton and Tokyo's Half-Fast Cyclists, Hamamatsu and Briarcliff Manor's Rotary Clubs, Alexandria Kiwanis Club, WCA Elementary School, and Briarciff High School's Multicultural Club for weloming PEPY presenters and providing a forum for discussion about Cambodia's needs and how we can all help. **Alex Coffey, Joe Ryan, and Kristian Whillans for organizing their own fundraisers and raising money for The PEPY Ride School. **Laurie and Jack at Tengu Foods for hosting a forum and inviting PEPY.
Thank you to everyone who has donated their time, money, energy, and enthusiasm!

The PEPY Ride School as of mid-July. Construction should be complete within weeks!

Got plans for Spring Break 2006? If you don't, consider this trip that will beat Girls Gone Wild. Come join the volunteer trip to Cambodia at the PEPY Ride School next March. You have the opportunity to change the lives of the children you meet, the community around you and your own!!! So if you want to travel, volunteer, teach, and explore Cambodia with a fun group of people, then why not enhance your trip by coming with us!
We will spend 3-4 days visiting The PEPY Ride School with 20 - 25 volunteers. While we're there, we will play games with the kids, have a Japanese Sports Day called Undokai, have a community clean-up, paint a mural, work in the garden, and run skills workshops with the other days exploring this fantastic part of Cambodia. Highlights include, taking a boat ride down the Tonle Sap to see floating villages, visiting an environmental education center and also visiting another school to hand deliver school supplies and smiles. Further highlights include watching a traditional Khmer dance performance, a visit to a historical market in Siem Reap, eating traditional Cambodian feasts and of course, not forgetting, a walk with the ancients at Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples.
If you've read up to here, you should consider joining our trip in March. For more information on the March Trip, visit www.chibaajet.org and click on the link located on the left hand side labeled "Cambodia Trip." There is one change. For those flying out of Japan, we will be leaving March 24th, Friday evening.
This will be a fun and rewarding experience that you'll remember for the rest of your lives! |

Special thanks this month goes out to our wonderful sponsor,

Keen is sponsoring The PEPY Ride with a free pair of their hybrid shoes for each rider. You've seen these innovative sandals EVERYWHERE, and for good reason! Our KEENs have already woven their way through the busy
streets of Tokyo, paddled through the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, taken a quick trip through the subways of NYC, and will soon pedal their way across Cambodia. Impressed with KEEN's hybrid performance? Well, you'll be even more impressed with their philosophy in "Giving Back." KEEN has made a commitment to "doing business responsibly, investing in our community, taking care of the environment and lessening our collective footprint on the planet."
The PEPY Ride is happy to join in KEEN's mission by giving back to our international community. Thank you KEEN! Visit www.keenfootwear.com to purchase your own!

| PEPY in a Documentary Film |
|
 |
|
 Hey everyone,
My name is Daniela Kon. I'm doing a documentary about the work of global NGO's, sustainable development and international volunteers, and I'll be on the road for the next 6 months working with various charity organizations and shooting part of my film. I am investigating the efforts, motivations, profits, limitations, challanges and politics of 'doing good', of being a productive social self in a global world that has been claimed to consist of 'dead subjects' whose disillusioned mediated reality has eradicated individual activism and possibilities of making a difference. I want to brake this sentiment, which is used as an excuse for people not to get involved. I want to portray the engagement of individuals who make a difference, inform about global inequities, investigate the boundaries of sustainable development and tackle the critical reputation of charity work. I want to animate people to get involved, to understand the necessity of sustainable development and to acknowledge that the idea that "everybody can make difference" is not to be downgraded to its theoretical fortune.
PEPY, as a grassroots, home-grown undertaking has inspired me from the moment I came across its unique mission. The PEPY idea needs to be heard and i'm looking forward to helping to shout it out as loud as possible!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to meet many of you in Cambodia.
Peace, Daniela Kon

Join us to support the Hurricane Relief Efforts!
Now is the time to get involved in PEPY's newest ride, The PEPY Hurricane Relief Ride. PEPY Riders will be cycling in the United States with an equally important and challenging goal! In May 2006, PEPY will take 25 riders from Beaumont, Texas to New Orleans, working in association with the YMCA's of Louisiana affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The YMCAs have been vital in working with the communities affected by the hurricanes; housing refugees, providing services for families and children, and helping to rebuild their communities. However many of the YMCAs themselves have suffered immense damages. Some are still underwater, and many are unable to provide services to their communities. YMCA educational programs are an integral part of these communities, especially their "Living Healthy Lifestyles" initiatives, which PEPY fully supports. We are working in partnership with YMCAs across the state to raise money through PEPY's Hurricane Relief Ride. Our goal over the next six months is to raise $50,000 US to help the YMCAs rebuild so that they may continue reinforcing their communities in positive ways.
We are currently looking for riders, volunteers, sponsors, support, and ideas! If you can help in any way, contact us at YMCAride@pepyride.org. |

Briarcliff High School's Multicultural Club, in New York state, voted to support The PEPY Ride as their year long charity project. They sold t-shirts in support of the PEPY cause and, so far, have raised over $200! They are still selling PEPY shirts, so if you are in the Briarcliff area, find a club member, or their wonderful adviser, Ms. Winter, and purchase your own shirt! Many thanks BHS students!
