Recognizing that the traditional school library model seems to be failing Cambodia (no librarians, lack of knowledge on using books in the classroom, locked libraries with little access to the books, etc), PEPY connected with other organizations in Cambodia in order to create classroom libraries matched with teacher training. By bringing the books into the classroom, the hope is that both the teachers will be empowered to creatively use the resources available to them and the students would have more access to reading material.
BETT (Basic Education and Teacher Training) has created Khmer Early Literacy Readers for grades 1 and 2, which are the first series of Khmer books that were specifically designed using standard practices for early literacy programs. The series is designed to be integrated into the government curriculum, utilizing the "most common" vocabulary in the native language, images designed for Cambodia, flash cards to work on sequencing, matching cards for new vocabulary acquisition, and other teaching resources. Grade 1 activities focus on speaking, listening, and reading, while Grade 2 adds a writing component. Both are designed to engage children with books and develop skills of selection, response and research.
For grades 3 through 6, PEPY worked with BETT and Room to Read (an NGO dedicated to creating local language children's literature and establishing libraries) to develop a library of selected Khmer children's books to supplement classroom activities, engage students, and foster a love and enjoyment of reading. The activities for each grade level build on one another, extending children's abilities to demonstrate understanding and strengthen their creative writing skills.
Librarian and teacher training offered by BETT accompany these amazing books and classroom activities to enable educators to be active in the selection of books and of matching activities to suitable books.
