The PEPY Ride School in Chanleas Dai, Siem Reap Province has a registration of over 500 students. Due to overcrowded schools, the government curriculum only requires 20 hours per week of instruction time in primary school, with students at most schools studying in 4 hour shifts, either from 7-11 AM or from 1-5 PM each day. As a supplement to the government-required curriculum, PEPY offers English and Computer and Khmer Literacy Programs for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. PEPY English classes are popular for their engaging nature, and also as a gateway to the opportunities that are often associated with English speaking abilities. Nearly all universities, scholarship and vocational training programs, and many job opportunities require English, making it a much desired skill even in rural areas. PEPY’s Computer program uses One Laptop Per Child's XO laptops. These learning tools are designed to be much more than a typical computer, with activities and tools specifically tailored to engage young learners, encourage creativity, and improve logical reasoning. With open source features, mesh networking, a sturdy design, and child-friendly programs, the XOs are quickly opening up students' eyes to new ways of thinking and learning. Using Scratch, an MIT-designed program, students are able to learn easy programming skills, sharpen critical thinking, improve mathematics and science skills, and even strengthen their Khmer literacy! Check out our student’s XO projects here! PEPY's solar power and satellite internet access offer students access to a wide range of learning opportunities through environmentally sustainable methods. The XO Computers are themselves environmentally friendly, with batteries that decompose into fertilizer and possess four times the lifetime of a normal battery.
